Are you an introverted parent or have an introverted child?  Ask yourself these questions.

Do you need alone time to recharge after socializing with new people?

Do you find yourself only committing to one short event per weekend so that you don’t get exhausted and overwhelmed?

Are you a one on one type of person?

Do you dislike crowds or large group social situations?

Do you spend a lot of time thinking deep thoughts?

Is parenting particularly challenging because it sometimes allows zero alone time to re-energize yourself?

If you answered yes, you may be an introvert. I know I am and so is my husband. Unfortunately our child is an extrovert which has made it hard for him to live with us at times.

In order to understand this dynamic and the challenges of being an introvert in an extrovert friendly culture, I’ve done a fair bit of personal research. I wanted to share it with you so that you know you are not alone. These books will help give you the tools you need to thrive and value your differences and do the same for your introverted child.

Books for Introverted Teens and Adults:

Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking by Susan Cain tops my list of recommendations because I read it and loved it. Why? Introverts are in the  minority in our culture and it can make a person feel like there is something wrong with them. Her book focuses on harnessing your introversion as a strength, not a weakness. The link above will also take you to Ms. Cain’s website that is full of other resources as well, including articles and workshops. She also has another book Quiet Power that is for teen introverts.

Introvert Doodles is a very funny online comic by Maureen Wilson and now there is a book version. I recently read the book and you will surely have some LOL moments. Ms. Wilson’s  illustrations are colorful and fun. This would make a good gift for an extroverted partner who doesn’t get you, it would surely bring a smile to his or her face.

The Misadventures of an Awkward Black Girl by Issa Rae is a book of humorous essays about what it is like to be an introverted misfit. If you need a break from the dry nonfiction books on this topic, you might give this one a try. It would be a good remedy for teen or adult readers.

The Hidden Gifts of the Introverted Child by Marti Olsen Laney is written by a psychologist and helps parents understand the temperaments of their introverted children.

The Highly Sensitive Person by Dr. Elaine Aron is another book that helped me personally because I’m also an HSP, as she calls us. If anyone was ever told you or your child “don’t be so sensitive,” this is the book for you. Ms. Aron has several books on the subject including one just for sensitive children. That said, as she points out on her website, sensitivity and introversion are not the same thing. However, 70 percent of HSP’s happen to also be introverted.

The Ultimate Parenting Guidebook for Introvert Moms, Dads and Kids by Jennifer C. Lowes is a short book with tips for parents and kids. It’s a quick read and the ebook is inexpensive if you are looking for a quick overview on the topic of introversion.

Books for Introverted Children:

Quinny & Hopper are chapter books by Adriana Brad Schanen. They were recommended by my Sub-it-Club writer’s group. There are three books in the series. and They are fictional stories that feature and introverted character. They are intended for kids ages 8-11

The Invisible Boy by Trudy Ludwig is about a quiet boy who feels invisible until a new kid arrives. They work together on a class project and that’s when things change for the better. It’s recommended for k-3rd graders who are on the shy side.

Ava and Pip by Carol Weston is about a fifth grader trying to help her shy older sister come out of her shell. There are three books in the series.

Matilda, Roald Dahl’s classic story about a bookish girl who comes into her own despite terrible parents and a mean headmistress is sure to appeal to introverted girls.

Quiet Kids: Help Your Introverted Child Succeed in an Extroverted World by Christine Fonseca is a nonfiction title that helps teachers and parents empower their children to excel in a world that may not understand them.

All of these books really helped me understand being introverted, especially as a parent. My son is an extrovert so the children's books gave him a deeper understanding of what it meant to want time alone. It showed him that even though I needed space, I still loved him. This inspired me to write a children's book for my son about an introverted skunk who loves his friends, but needs a little space.
