If you are a new writer looking to build your portfolio of clips, you may want to find some sites that accept guest posting opportunities. I’ve compiled a list of 12 sites that are looking for posts about parenting and other topics.
The first four on the list, I have personal experience with. I’ve included my clips if you want to check them out. The last eight sites on the list were found through research but might be worth submitting pitches to.
12 Unpaid Guest Posting Opportunities
There are paid and unpaid opportunities with Buzzfeed. I wrote a piece about breakfast spots in Portland here.
This is a great site for moms, especially if they have gone through the adoption process. There is a “What I Want You to Know” feature that showcases personal stories from guest posters. Check mine out here.
This is a site sponsored by the Today Show and their sponsors. They have a community area where you can post your stories about parenting or food. I wrote a piece about things I wish I’d enjoyed more when I was pregnant.
This is us! We enjoy receiving guest posts by other writer/parents. It turns out we’ve been lucky so far to receive a variety of well crafted posts from other writers in the Pen and Parent community. So if you write about parenting and or writing or blogging, send us your pitch.
The following eight websites/blogs might be worth submitting to, but I have not personally had experience with them. If you do, let us know how it went.
This site is known for mommy confessional type material and lots of honest wit. Actually I did submit something to Scary Mommy once but it wasn’t accepted. The competition there is fierce, at least that’s what I told myself.
This is a blog for single moms, so if that’s you, it might be worth sending in a thoughtful blog pitch.
This site seems to cover pregnancy, kids and lifestyle topics. If you have expertise in one of these areas, it might be worth looking into.
Like the title suggests, this site is all about balancing motherhood and self care.
This is an online magazine for mothers, so if that’s you, you may want to check out their style and send in your idea for a guest post.
"Useful life hacks to make life easier" is this site's tagline. They cover a variety of subjects.
This site features a podcast and also has an online resource for busy moms.
They say they provide “News, tips, inspiration for digital writers, entrepreneurs and other creatives.”
That's 12 guest posting opportunities to help fill out your portfolio.
I know, no one wants to work for “exposure” and no pay forever, but sometimes you need a few clips to show potential freelance writing clients or blogs that pay for blog posts.
Just think, if you submit to even half of these publications, you are bound to eventually get a bite somewhere. The more you write, the better you get.
